Meet Jane Round

Jane Round is one of the two recipients of the FIM 4th Quarter Grant Awards. Recently we asked Jane the following questions about how her grant award and FIM’s support will help her brand.
How will you being using the grant you received this quarter from FIM?
I will be using the funds from my grant to create meaningful brand imagery for my FW17 collection. I will be putting together a photo shoot to capture images for a look book and also product images for line sheets and for my online shop. With these images I will be creating physical look books used to convey brand ideas to wholesale and retail buyers and I will be creating line sheets used for buyers placing wholesale orders. The images will also be used for social media and in other forms of print marketing to increase awareness of the brand.
How will the grant impact your work and brand as a designer?
This grant will allow me to put together professional marketing materials which will more effectively tell the story I have in my head to potential buyers and customers. Branding is all about telling a story with your merchandise and being able to do so in a more professional and impactful way will reach more customers and will benefit my brand’s sales as well as my brand’s reputation.
Would you recommend other designers going through the FIM Grant Application process?
I would definitely recommend going through the grant process. Even if you don’t receive a grant it is a great learning opportunity and having the ability to put those words about your brand down on paper will only help you in the future. The first time I applied for the grant I didn’t receive it, but putting the work into creating really thoughtful answers to the questions helped me more fully understand my brand narrative and what I wanted to do with my brand.
What was the most difficult thing you have done as a designer?
Besides the actual construction of garments and the constant learning about new techniques and materials, creating a real presence for the brand has been difficult.
How have you overcome that?
I have worked to overcome that difficulty through consistent use of social media and having physical marketing to distribute after this grant cycle is complete will contribute to getting the brand in front of the right eyes.
What tips do you have for aspiring designers, especially those in the Midwest?
Aspire to make the very best quality that you can produce. Don’t take short cuts. Know your craft. Be committed to continued learning about new techniques and materials. Continue to push your creativity, but always keep in mind that in order for a business to succeed, someone will have to buy your product.
How has FIM helped and/or influences your work/brand?
Once this process is complete FIM will have supported me by increasing the visibility of my brand through the use of professional imagery and marketing materials.
